In all the lists of the best train journeys, there is one that always amazes me by its absence.
In 1999 I took the Puno to Cusco Express as an hors-d’oeuvre to the Machu Picchu Trail.
The ten-hour journey from the shores of Lake Titicaca (the highest navigable lake in the world) to the Inca capital passed through some stunning scenery, but never seems to get a mention in top rail journey lists.
Take a look at this short National Geographic video and a few of my photographs and make up your own mind…..

P.S. thankfully I avoided the dining car and didn’t witness that ‘entertainment’ – each to their own!
So what do you think?
Tempting!

Good pictures. Train spotting seems rather hazardous in Peru!

Those are incredible photos! They must have been taking on film, right, at that point?

Yes good old Kodak gold that I scanned in. Those were then days that you couldn’t afford to take 100s of shots!
